Restaurant Spotlight: Pepe’s Bosque Mexican Grill

Pepe’s opened its doors under the name El Bosque just three months after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The restaurant’s focus was on creating a family atmosphere where guests could enjoy a blend of authentic Mexican and Tex-Mex cuisine. The memories of those first years have stayed with Estanislao “Pepe” Perez and his daughter, Lilian Perez, who work diligently with their staff to build and maintain a relationship with the community — whose support they credit for making Pepe’s the popular restaurant it is today.

Aside from the delectable food, Perez says one of the main reasons that guests love Pepe’s is Pepe himself.

“He takes pride in making sure that his guests feel seen and welcomed,” Perez says. “When you visit, you are likely to pass him working on the garden, running food to tables or enthusiastically singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to a guest celebrating with us. Pepe’s is truly a family business.”

MOST POPULAR DISHES: Perez says the California burrito is popular largely due to its size and all the diverse flavors packed into a giant flour tortilla. It consists of layered refried beans, Spanish rice, grilled chicken and steak, grilled vegetables, fresh pico de gallo, sour cream, guacamole and lettuce – all topped with cheese sauce.

“Pepe’s is also known for having the best fried shrimp on the Coast,” Perez says. “You would not think of fried shrimp when you think of traditional Mexican cuisine, but just ask around, or come try for yourself.”

DELICIOUS NEW ADDITIONS: Have you heard about Pepe’s secret menu? The latest addition is Pepe’s version of the Mexican pizza, and Perez suggests asking your server about the shrimp teriyaki. Pepe’s also will feature live music on the patio this summer.
