Get Better at Networking

Divide and conquer

Just because someone is a part of your company doesn’t mean that you should stick with them the entire event. Networking is about building connections and drawing new people into your network. Instead, split the room so your business has more opportunities to connect with more people.

Show genuine interest

Don’t be that person who comes around only when you need something and rarely asks how you can help others. Networking is a two-way street, so give, give, give. Don’t make it all about you, you, you. Actively listening will pay off in the long run.

Follow-up with relationships

After introducing yourself to someone whom you consider a potential partner or mentor, schedule time on your calendar to make two follow-ups with them. Failing to keep in touch or reaching out only when you need something will leave you out in the cold.

Don’t be a card pusher

We’ve all done it. The morning after an event, you have a promotional bag full of business cards with no clue of who each person is or how they actually fit into your network. Get to know the person first, gauge if there’s a connection and then end the conversation by offering your card. “Your business card is only as powerful as the impression you leave behind.” — Diane Gottsman

Work the room

Speak with multiple people throughout the event. Don’t hold people hostage and avoid rambling. It’s easy to find yourself getting stuck in one clique of people you already know. However, your goal is to meet new people, so get out of your comfort zone and go mingle.
