GCW Annual Home Guide 2022

Trends, tips and ideas to help you live better

Cabinet Trends

All-white kitchens have had their day, but in 2022, homeowners are leaning toward more interesting, bold choices — both in terms of color and style. As homeowners look to streamline and simplify their storage, cabinetry is getting revamped to look sleeker and more contemporary. Glass doors with dark accents, for instance, are a perfect way to highlight your prettiest dishware.

Countertop Trends

WARMER, DARKER TONES

Cool, gray shades have been dominant in recent years, but experts predict that homeowners will continue moving toward darker, more adventurous color choices for their countertops. The result is a sophisticated, statement-making kitchen that is also thoroughly modern. For an eye-catching contrast, pair dark countertops with lighter-colored cabinets and backsplash — or vice versa.

THINSCAPE

Like cabinets, countertops in general are trending toward a more sleek, slender profile. And if you want a luxurious look for less, Thinscape may be your solution. It’s made from a half-inch base and has the appearance of marble, granite and quartz at a significantly lower price. Besides being relatively inexpensive, Thinscape is also durable and stain resistant.

Quick tip!

Some countertop options may look great, but make sure they fit your desired price point and be aware of their pros and cons. For instance, quartz and granite are extremely durable, but can be pricey, while marble is beautiful, but susceptible to chipping and cracking.

Sinks, tubs and faucets

Homes are trending toward minimalism and simplicity in general, but bathrooms are getting especially pared down. Cluttered, crowded shelves are out; sleek, stylish accents are in. Spa-like vibes are the goal, and they are achieved with a calming color palate and by incorporating organic elements into your design. Natural materials, such as stone and wood, are in demand along with freestanding sink basins and tubs. Open-concept showers and wetrooms can make the most of limited space while giving a bathroom a high-end, contemporary feel.

HIGH CONTRAST

Have fun with your design by considering shiny finishes, bold color choices and contrasting palettes. Even if your bathroom is small square footage-wise, there’s no reason it can’t be packed with personality.

Quick tip!

Want to add some retro flair to your bathroom? It’s all in the details. Exposed piping and other industrial-inspired elements are a surefire way to give your shower plenty of aesthetic appeal.

Lighting Trends

Whatever your personal taste and style, let it shine through with distinctive lighting. One trend homeowners are loving is handcrafted fixtures, like these rattan pendant lights. Artisan-made pieces, created with sustainable materials, offer much more than light. They provide a one-of-a-kind focal point and add instant warmth and character.

A LITTLE BIT DRAMATIC

Bold, elegant lighting solutions that double as works of art are all the rage. The Cerine double pendant by Trueing, composed of glass chain links and two blown glass orbs, is at once delicate and dramatic. Plus, it’s easily customizable to your space.

Quick tip!

Forget everything you thought you knew about chandeliers. The delicate glass pendants of the past are giving way to contemporary glamour and more sculptural design. This Capiz honeycomb chandelier, for example, is a chic choice that diffuses a warm glow throughout any room.

Backsplash Trends

FULL SLABS

Homeowners are choosing slab backsplashes in place of tile because they eliminate grout lines and provide a clean, modern and luxurious look.

Also look for alternative materials, like wood and stone, or even a mixture of glass and steel, to be used more frequently in kitchens to lend them a unique touch — in addition to being more eco-friendly. If homeowners are using the ever-popular subway tile at all, they’re gravitating toward larger sizes, or even to tiles with creative designs.

Quick tip!

Think outside the box with fun, head-turning patterns, and rather than keeping your backsplash between the countertops and cabinets, take it all the way to the ceiling for a modern effect that’s sure to grab attention.
