There’s something magical about giving old pieces a second life, especially when they come with a little history and a lot of character. On my latest thrift run, I found two picture frames that had seen better days — but I knew they had potential.
Instead of tossing them aside, I turned them into sweet, cottage core-inspired wall art using fabric scraps and simple watercolor details. This DIY is affordable, beginner- and kid-friendly and the perfect way to add a soft, handmade touch to your space.
If you love cozy, collected decor that feels like it belongs in a storybook cottage, this one’s for you.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
- Thrifted picture frames
- Fabric scraps (old bed sheets, thrifted fabric or leftover pieces work perfectly)
- Watercolor paper
- Watercolors and brush
- Glue stick
- Scissors
STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS
- Prep your frames: Start by removing the old artwork and backing from your thrifted frames. Give them a quick wipe down to remove dust or residue. Don’t worry about minor imperfections; they add to the charm.
- Cut your fabric backing: Choose your fabric and cut it to fit the size of the frame opening. This will be your soft, textured background. Light florals, gingham, stripes or muted tones work beautifully for that cottage-core look.
- Attach the fabric: Use a glue stick to lightly adhere the fabric to the backing or directly behind the frame opening. Smooth out any wrinkles as you go.
- Add watercolor paper: Tear or cut a piece of watercolor paper slightly smaller than your fabric background so the fabric shows around the edges like a border. The torn edges give it an extra handmade, organic feel.
- Paint your design: Using watercolors, paint simple doodles on your paper. Think wildflowers, stems, tiny leaves or even soft abstract shapes. Keep it loose and imperfect; that’s where the magic is.
- Assemble your frame: Once your painting is dry, glue the watercolor piece onto the fabric. Place everything back into the frame and secure it.
TIPS FOR THE PERFECT COTTAGE CORE LOOK
- Embrace imperfection: Uneven edges, soft brush strokes and mismatched frames all add to the charm.
- Mix and match: Try pairing different fabrics and frame styles together for a collected, layered look.
- Keep it soft: Stick to muted, earthy or pastel tones for that cozy, vintage feel.
- Use what you have: Old sheets, scrap fabric or even clothing can be repurposed beautifully here.
- Create a set: Make a few and hang them as a gallery wall for maximum impact.
- Kids’ artwork: This would be a great way to display your kids’ artwork to tie in with your home decor aesthetic
There’s something special about creating decor that feels personal and handmade, especially when it starts with something overlooked. These little frames may have been headed for the discard pile, but now they tell a new story.
