Your how-to for a stress-free holiday

It’s the most wonderful time of the year; unfortunately, it also can be the most stressful. There’s family and friends to visit, parties to host and gifts to purchase. Before you know it, the season you looked forward to has become more of a chore than a joyous occasion. Don’t let the pressures of the holidays stop you from enjoying this special time. Here are five tips to help get you through the holiday season stress-free:

DON’T EXPECT PERFECTION.

The bulk of your anxiety can be eliminated if you understand that the unexpected will happen. I get it; you were hoping to send out a beautiful family Christmas card to everyone, but your child won’t stop making silly faces. It’s okay. That gives your family card character.

REMEMBER TO TAKE A BREAK.

Your calendar may fill up fast with all things holiday, but don’t forget to schedule some time out for yourself to rest. Doing so will allow you to be more relaxed and in better spirits.

KEEP YOUR DAILY ROUTINE.

If you usually take time in the morning for a workout, stick with it. Don’t skip on your healthy habits just because you have guests in town or additional obligations. Maintaining your fitness, mental and physical, will help you handle the holiday stress better — and balance out that extra piece of pie.

DON’T HESITATE TO ASK FOR HELP.

Instead of trying to do everything by yourself, ask for help. Your guests usually will be happy to pitch in, and it helps them feel included.

IT’S OK TO SAY “NO.”

Don’t feel obligated to say “yes” to everything and everyone. While you want to accept every invitation, it’s unrealistic to think you can do it all. Be selective with your time, and recognize that it’s fine to say “no” when you can’t attend.

The holidays should be fun and festive — not stressful. Remember to take time to celebrate and enjoy your loved ones. Ultimately, nothing else matters.
