Eight decades of excellence

Memorial Health System celebrates 80 years of innovation, resilience and compassionate care

For 80 years, Memorial Health System has been a cornerstone of healthcare on the Coast, growing from a community hospital into a regional, integrated health system while remaining committed to serving the people who call this area home.

As Memorial celebrates eight decades of being a trusted healthcare provider, the milestone offers an opportunity to celebrate a backstory marked by innovation, resilience and a steadfast commitment to improving healthcare for generations of families.

DECADES OF DEFINING MOMENTS

The organization’s story has unfolded alongside many of the region’s most significant events. In 1969, as Hurricane Camille ravaged the Mississippi Gulf Coast, Memorial marked its first 25 years while helping the community recover from the devastating natural disaster.

Over the decades, Memorial has consistently expanded its capabilities, such as cardiology services. In 1987, the health system launched its Cardiovascular Center, introducing cardiac catheterization, open-heart surgery and cardiac rehabilitation. That same year, Memorial performed the Mississippi Gulf Coast’s first civilian coronary artery bypass graft surgery, marking a significant advancement in local cardiac care. Now, Memorial has the largest heart care team in the region.

Growth continued throughout the 1990s. Memorial opened its first Urgicare facility in Orange Grove in 1994, expanding access to convenient medical care. Two years later, during its 50th anniversary celebration, the health system completed a major expansion and opened the Coast’s only civilian neonatal intensive care unit, bringing advanced care for the region’s smallest and most vulnerable patients closer to home. Now, Memorial operates three hospitals, more than 100 physician clinics, two nursing homes, multiple surgery centers and has increased access to specialized maternal care through partnerships in maternal-fetal medicine and a 24/7 obstetrics emergency department.

DID YOU KNOW?

Even with providing hundreds of millions of dollars in uncompensated and charity care as part of its mission, Memorial is still a significant economic driver.

One in eight jobs in Harrison County is supported by Memorial. In fiscal year 2025, Memorial had an economic impact of $964.8 million.

MEETING CHALLENGES, BUILDING ON SUCCESS

More watershed moments followed. The Memorial Cancer Center opened in 2002, strengthening access to specialized cancer care for Gulf Coast residents. During Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Memorial remained fully operational, with a designated team on duty throughout the storm, demonstrating an extraordinary dedication to patient care during one of Mississippi’s greatest crises.

Memorial continued building on that foundation of excellence. In 2007, it became the first hospital in Mississippi to earn certification as a Primary Stroke Center from The Joint Commission. In 2009, Memorial became home to the only Level II Trauma Center serving Harrison and Hancock counties, further expanding access to lifesaving emergency care. The opening of Memorial Hospital Stone County in 2019 extended the health system’s reach to even more communities.

Like healthcare organizations across the nation, Memorial faced unprecedented challenges when the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020. Yet the years since also have been marked by continued progress. Recent achievements include launching the Memorial Graduate Medical Education program, achieving a major financial turnaround, opening Memorial Hospital Biloxi and earning Level I Stroke Center designation — one of only four such centers in Mississippi and the only one south of Jackson.

A LEGACY OF TOUCHING LIVES

Healthcare on the Mississippi Gulf Coast has changed dramatically over the past 80 years, evolving from a handful of small, independent hospitals along the coastline in the 1940s into the specialty-driven health systems that serve our region today.

Throughout that transformation, Memorial has remained at the forefront of innovation while maintaining its commitment to compassionate, patient-centered care.

As Memorial celebrates 80 years of service, its legacy is measured not only by milestones and medical advancements, but by the countless lives touched through eight decades of caring for the Coast.
