Make Christmas break magical

by Rebecca Ritchey

Christmas break is right around the corner, which means Christmas carols, gifts, memories and the kids home for 10 days. Ten days! Most moms have grandiose plans for the holiday break, but it stays in the plans category. This year, make those plans happen. Here are five things to do to make Christmas break magical.

BAKE COOKIES

Baking cookies is a fun activity to do with the children. Be prepared for a mess, but also be prepared for good memories. The cookies can be as extravagant or as simple as you would like, and be decorated or plain. Laugh and talk with your kids while you make some sweet treats.

SERVE OTHERS

Teaching your children to serve others during the holidays is a great life experience. Talk to your children about who they would like to visit. Does your family have a heart for the elderly in nursing homes? Do those in need pull your heartstrings? By doing this, you will not only be able to serve others, but you will have an opportunity to learn more about your children and what stirs their compassion.

BE SANTA

One year, my mom and I played Santa for a newlywed couple. For the 12 days leading up to Christmas, my mom and I delivered items to their door with a little note coinciding with that number of day. We never put our name on the notes and we made sure we delivered the items at a time when they would not be awake. If you know of someone with a new baby, a newlywed, or just someone who needs to know they are loved, be Santa to them!

SING

Ask friends to join you and go around your neighborhood singing Christmas carols. As Buddy says in the movie “Elf,” “The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear!” Even though we live in the South and a white Christmas is rare, it is still fun to sing about snow, sledding and silent nights. And don’t worry if your voice isn’t amazing…you will be in a group!

HAVE FUN

The number one thing to do on Christmas break is to have fun with your children. Choose to make good memories and choose to be patient and kind. Take some moments to experience the magic of Christmas through your children’s eyes.
