Get over those natural hair fears

By Brittney Fairley//

Do you want to do the BIG CHOP, but you’re scared because you’re not really sure how to style your natural hair? Or are you already natural but are contemplating going back to the creamy crack (relaxer) because the natural hairstyles that you like don’t look right on your hair type? All of these are common concerns, but there is an easy answer to your natural black hair woes. Realize it’s all about finding what style works for YOU.

I think we are all guilty of looking at natural hair pictures of others and wishing that our hairstyling results would come out like theirs. Well, at least that’s what I did. No matter how much I tried the famous natural hairstyle “Bantu knots,” it just didn’t look right on me. It seemed like everyone else’s Bantu knot results came out effortlessly and mine looked horrible.

One day I made up my mind that enough was enough and I started trying different styles and figured out what works for my hair. I actually found several styles that looked right on me. My go-to hairstyle is a flat twist-out with perm rods.

A flat twist-out is basically taking sections of your hair and doing a two-strand twist braided down to your scalp and rolling the ends with a perm rod. I let my hair air-dry overnight, then I pull the twists apart, fluff and I’m ready to take over the world.

Finding a natural hairstyle and technique that works for you may take a little research, but there’s plenty of information available online and many stylists specialize in natural hair.
