Fighting ‘the giant’: Chantal Bailey Gollott’s survivor story

Chantal Bailey Gollott has been married to her husband, Kevin Gollott, for 37 years, and the couple had two daughters, Gabrielle and Isabella. Sadly, Isabella passed away unexpectedly at age 25.

Gabrielle and Chantal, along with Kevin, own and operate Gourmet Gabby — a charcuterie and catering company.

MY HEALTH CHALLENGE

In late August, I was diagnosed with blood clots in both legs and my right arm and was prescribed blood thinners. After a couple weeks, I began to hemorrhage and was taken to the hospital. Emergency surgery was performed, and a large mass was removed. The biopsy came back as a rare and aggressive cancer: serous carcinoma stage 3.

MY APPROACH

I was devastated at this news, I felt like I’d received a death sentence but only allowed this idea to frighten me briefly. Together, my doctors came up with my plan of care.

I knew that I had to pull myself together and attack this “giant” that was trying to kill me. My husband and I began saying the rosary twice a day; we were in constant prayer.

MY TREATMENT

Killing the giant meant six rounds of chemotherapy and following the advice and diet of others who also had fought this giant.

I am so fortunate to have an angel for a husband and a precious, loving daughter. On the days I didn’t have the strength to eat or drink, they would ensure I was getting enough nutrition by feeding me tiny bites 24 hours a day. Kevin barely slept, making sure I was OK throughout the night.

WHAT LIFE IS LIKE NOW

I am now cancer free, but still in treatment. I have finished chemo and am now undergoing radiation therapy.

The hardest part of being sick is not being able to interact with my family and grandchildren. I was isolated for months due to low white blood cells.

The most rewarding part of this Journey has been the time my husband and I have spent together in prayer, growing in our faith and love for God. I have been so fortunate to have friends and priests to bring me Holy Communion every week.

Life is beautiful; I have received a miracle! I am forever grateful that God has extended my life. I must use this time to glorify Him through my acts and help lead souls to heaven. I am grateful!

MY ADVICE TO OTHERS

God can heal you; pray and follow the direction of your doctor. No matter how bad they tell you it is, God does not care. Nothing is too big for him. Lean on your faith.
