Here, we catch up with Ronald Chambers, executive director of Bethesda Free Health Clinic in Ocean Springs. In his role, Chambers oversees daily operations, from coordinating staff and volunteers to managing programs, partnerships and outreach — ensuring the clinic delivers high-quality, compassionate care to those who need it most.

1. What does the clinic do? How did it get started?
Bethesda Free Health Clinic provides free primary care and basic dental services to underserved, uninsured and underinsured residents along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. What began as a grassroots effort by a small group of volunteers has grown into a trusted community health resource.
2. What is new with the clinic? What are some of the latest developments?
Thanks to a new grant, we are launching a partnership with Uber to provide transportation for patients without reliable access to the clinic. This program will help individuals in need of primary care get to their appointments safely and on time. Our goal is to work closely with local emergency rooms to identify patients who need follow-up care and provide them with a ride to our clinic, ensuring they receive the support and continuity of care they deserve.
3. What are the clinic’s most significant challenges?
Like many nonprofits, our biggest challenge is balancing growing demand with limited resources. We see more patients each year, but funding, staffing and space constraints make it challenging to keep up. Consistent support from partners and volunteers enables us to stretch every dollar, but long-term sustainability remains our top priority.
4. What does the clinic need from the community?
We need volunteers, partnerships and financial support. Whether you are a medical professional offering a few hours, a business willing to sponsor a program or a donor contributing what you can, every effort strengthens our mission and keeps our doors open.
5. What are the clinic’s hopes and goals going forward?
Looking ahead, I would like Bethesda to expand its educational programs to include blood-pressure checks, weight-loss awareness and diabetes education. These programs empower patients to take charge of their health and prevent chronic issues before they start.
