As a dermatology provider, I know our beloved Mississippi Coast can be tough on our skin if we’re not careful. The intense heat and humidity require a different kind of skin strategy.
This summer, let’s embrace the warmth while keeping our skin looking and feeling its healthiest. Here are a few tips to keep you glowing all summer long:
1. Sunscreen is your non-negotiable BFF (Yes, even on cloudy days!)
I say this every day in my clinic, and it’s especially crucial here. Our skin is constantly exposed to harmful UV rays, even when it’s overcast or you’re just running errands. For our coastal climate, choose a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher. Look for “water resistant” if you plan on enjoying some time by the water. Apply liberally 15-30 minutes before you head outside; reapply every two hours and immediately after swimming or sweating excessively. Don’t forget those often-missed spots like the tops of your ears, the back of your neck and the tops of your feet
2. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate (inside and out)
The humidity makes us feel wet, but that doesn’t mean our skin is hydrated. Drinking plenty of plain water is essential for overall health and helps your skin maintain its elasticity.
On the outside, opt for lighter, oil-free moisturizers during the day. Heavy creams can feel suffocating in the heat. Consider incorporating a hyaluronic acid serum into your routine; it’s a fantastic humectant that draws moisture from the air into your skin — perfect for humid climates.
3. Cleanse gently but effectively
Between sweat, sunscreen and the occasional salty breeze, our pores can get clogged easily. A gentle cleanser used morning and night is key to removing these impurities without stripping your skin’s natural oils. Avoid harsh scrubbing or overly hot water, which can irritate and dry out your skin.
4. Don’t neglect your lips and eyes
These delicate areas are particularly susceptible to sun damage. Use a lip balm with SPF and wear sunglasses with UV protection to shield the skin around your eyes. Not only do they offer protection, but sunglasses also help prevent squinting, which can contribute to fine lines over time.
5. Seek shade, especially during peak hours
The sun is strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Whenever possible, seek refuge under an umbrella, a shady tree or indoors during these times. This is a simple, yet incredibly effective, way to reduce your sun exposure.
Taking care of your skin in the summer doesn’t have to be complicated. By incorporating these simple habits into your routine, you can enjoy all the beauty our Coast summer has to offer while keeping your skin healthy, radiant and protected.
Wishing you a happy and sun-safe summer!
