Many of Lindsey Rogers Fowler’s favorite childhood memories involve Christmas in the Pass.
Born and raised in Pass Christian, she’s been participating in the city’s signature holiday celebration her whole life.
“As a child, I was honored to serve as an elf one year, riding in the parade with Santa and Mrs. Claus,” Fowler recalls fondly. “I played the carol bells with the choir of our beloved St. Paul’s Catholic Church, which is sadly no longer there since Hurricane Katrina.”
Over the years, Fowler’s role has evolved from wide-eyed spectator to proud organizer. When the event’s main coordinator, Capt. Andy Purchner, asked her to help him and his team bring the festival back to its former glory, she gladly accepted.
This year marks the celebration’s 40th anniversary, and the Pass Christian Firefighter’s Association is gearing up to present another unforgettable Christmas in the Pass on Dec. 5. As the event’s co-coordinator, Fowler promises plenty of Santa sightings, showcases of local talent, food and treats, fun activities for kids and neighborly, small-town charm.
Far from being just a festival, Fowler says Christmas in the Pass is a glimpse into who Pass Christian is and what the Mississippi Gulf Coast values.
“This event is welcoming, warm and festive, showing the Pass’s tradition of opening its arms to anyone who wants to be part of the celebration, whether locals or guests from nearby towns,” she says. “From local vendors and artists to performances by school groups and community organizations, the event showcases Pass Christian’s appreciation for the arts and town traditions.”
FOOD, FUN, FIREWORKS AND MORE
Those in attendance will be treated to performances of Christmas music by school choirs, bands and community groups. Downtown will transform into a magical winter wonderland with lots of festive lights and thousands of revelers getting into the holiday spirit.
With so many highlights, it’s hard for Fowler to pick her favorite part of the event.
“I always enjoy the parade and lighting of our town Christmas tree, seeing so many old and new faces and watching the children enjoy Santa and all the activities set up for them,” she says. “The food is always highly anticipated, especially the eggroll booth by the local Vietnamese community, and many more delicious food vendors.”
The night will culminate in a colorful display that locals and visitors alike look forward to all year.
“The fireworks show is one you won’t want to miss,” Fowler says.
THE CREATION OF WHOVILLE
A few years ago, Fowler had the inspired idea to use a small historical building and its outer area as a “Whoville” section for kids. Today, it’s where visitors can meet and take pictures with Santa Claus and the Grinch.
“Andy and his fellow firefighters, along with so many local people, have helped turn this area into a whimsical retreat for everyone,” Fowler says.
As for the parade, she says the route will be extended from Davis Avenue onto Scenic Drive this year, “so we anticipate more vendors.”
SHOWING OFF PASS CHRISTIAN
Christmas in the Pass has become a multi-generational tradition for Fowler, whose children now enjoy participating as much as she once did.
“My two daughters have both been elves on Santa’s sleigh, and hopefully my little boy will be able to do it when he’s a little older, she says. “The girls (also) have enjoyed helping out in Whoville.”
As this year’s Christmas in the Pass approaches, Fowler and her family anticpate it with a mix of warm nostalgia and excitement for what it will become in the future.
“Pass Christian is my home, and I’m so proud to show it off,” she says. “All the hard work makes it so worth it to see everyone enjoying the night.”
