Back-to-school season in the South starts offensively early.
While the rest of the country is still soaking up summer, Gulf Coast parents already are buying school supplies, completing forms and trying to get everyone back on a schedule before school starts in late July or early August.
If you want those first few weeks to feel less chaotic, the prep really must start now.
SLOWLY ADJUST BEDTIME
Instead of shifting sleep schedules overnight, start moving bedtime earlier by 10 to 15 minutes each week in July. The transition back to school mornings will feel much less painful for everyone.
CLEAN OUT CLOTHES
Go through drawers, closets and shoes before school shopping starts. Donate or sell what no longer fits and make a list of what’s needed before buying more. Pro tip: Magnolia Children’s Resale is a great small business option for consigning and buying kids clothes and shoes, and Elijah’s Closet is a worthwhile cause to support by donating gently used items.
SCHEDULE APPOINTMENTS
Book doctor, dentist and eye appointments, as well as back-to-school haircuts, before summer ends to avoid missing school later.
CREATE A FAMILY CALENDAR
Between school events, sports, appointments, work meetings and extracurriculars, one shared calendar makes life much easier. Pro tip: Google Calendar or a Skylight Calendar work well for keeping the entire family on the same page.
RESTOCK EASY BREAKFAST AND LUNCH STAPLES
Take the hassle out of busy school mornings with simple grab-and-go options already in the house. Yogurt, fruit, protein waffles, sandwich supplies, snack bins and other easy lunchbox items save time and stress.
ORDER BACKPACKS AND LUNCHBOXES EARLY
Embroidered backpacks and lunchboxes take time, so order them now to ensure they’re ready for their first day. Pro tip: 605 Pharmacy and Feeney’s Fine Gifts and Decor have the cutest selection!
CREATE A DROP ZONE NEAR THE DOOR
Designate one area for backpacks, shoes, folders, water bottles and library books. A simple basket or bench near the door can make mornings much smoother.
DECLUTTER THE CAR
The car becomes a second home during the school year. Clean it out before school starts or schedule a detail service. Keep wipes, extra clothes, snacks and trash bags stocked and ready to go.
BUY TEACHER GIFTS
Pick up a few teacher gifts while you’re out and about. Pro tip: Shop small makers’ markets. Summer is their slowest season, and they’ll appreciate your business as much as the teachers will appreciate the gifts.
A few simple steps in July can help the school year start on a happier, more peaceful note. Happy back-to-school season, mamas!
