Sun damage doesn’t wait for September – but that’s when it may start to show

After a summer of Gulf Coast sun, your skin has a story to tell — and late summer is when it starts telling it: new spots, uneven tone or a texture that wasn’t there in June.

September is the perfect time for a skin check-in before back-to-school schedules and fall routines push it to the bottom of the list.

WHAT SUMMER LEAVES BEHIND

Even with sunscreen, most of us pick up some cumulative sun exposure between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Common signs include:

  • Dark patches or new freckling, especially across the cheeks and forehead
  • A spot that looks different from the others — new, changing or asymmetrical
  • Rougher texture or fine, dry patches that sunscreen alone won’t fix
  • Dullness from weeks of heat, humidity, and sweat

The spot you almost didn’t mention is usually the one worth mentioning.

A SIMPLE SEPTEMBER RESET

You don’t need a complicated routine to recover from summer. A few adjustments go a long way:

  • Add an antioxidant serum (vitamin C is a good starting point) to help fade discoloration.
  • Reintroduce gentle exfoliation once or twice a week to clear dull, sun-worn skin.
  • Keep the sunscreen habit going. Gulf Coast sun doesn’t clock out after Labor Day, so stick with a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every day.
  • Book an annual skin check if it’s been a year or longer since your last one.

WHEN TO CALL A MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL

Most late-summer skin changes are cosmetic and manageable at home, but any spot that is new, changing, bleeding, or simply doesn’t look like the rest of your skin deserves a professional look. Catching something early is always easier than treating it later.

The best time to check in on your skin isn’t after a scare. It’s now.
