Nesting parties: A sweet way to support new parents

By Katrina Currie

When Ashley and Russell McKeithan learned they were expecting their first child, their hearts overflowed with joy and anticipation. Every ultrasound, kick and milestone brought them closer to a brand-new chapter of life. With their baby’s arrival approaching, those feelings of excitement only intensified — along with an overwhelming list of things to do before the big day.

Amid that whirlwind, something incredibly meaningful happened: Their loved ones rallied around them with a nesting party. While traditional baby showers have long been a way to celebrate a new life with cute gifts and fun games, nesting parties are emerging as a heartfelt and practical alternative — or complement — to the classic celebration.

WHAT IS A NESTING PARTY?

A nesting party is a hands-on, heart-centered gathering where friends and family not only celebrate the upcoming arrival, but also provide meaningful, tangible help. From folding laundry, assembling cribs and deep cleaning the nursery to prepping freezer meals, organizing baby clothes, and even installing car seats, nesting parties are all about lightening the mental and physical load that expectant parents carry in those final weeks.

For the McKeithans, the gesture meant everything. Their village stepped up not just to give gifts, but to offer time, energy and love. The house began to reflect the peace and order they had wanted for their new child. And just as importantly, the couple felt emotionally uplifted and reminded they weren’t on this journey alone.

PREPARING FOR A NEW LIFE TOGETHER

In a world and time when many parents are navigating pregnancy while also juggling jobs, responsibilities and life pressures, a nesting party is a refreshing return to community care. It says, “We see you. We support you. And we’re in this with you.”

For anyone looking to host a meaningful celebration for parents-to-be, consider a nesting party. It’s more than checking off a to-do list. It’s a moment of connection, support and preparation that goes far beyond the surface. And for families like the McKeithans, it’s a gift that lasts long after the guests have gone home.

FIVE TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL NESTING PARTY

  1. Ask what’s needed. Talk with the parents-to-be in advance about their biggest stressors and plan around their real needs, not assumptions.
  2. Keep the guest list intentional. Invite close friends and family who are willing to roll up their sleeves.
  3. Create task areas like “meal-prep central” or “onesie-sorting zone.” This helps guests know what to do an establishes a spirit of teamwork.
  4. Yes, it’s a working party — but make it fun! Add snacks, upbeat music maybe a toast or short prayer/blessing over the growing family.
  5. End the party by cleaning up and helping reset the space. The goal is for the parents to feel relieved and cared for, not more overwhelmed than when you arrived.
