How to (gently) nudge your man to see the doctor — and why he needs to go

If you’ve tried to get the man in your life to go to the doctor, you know this task can be mission impossible. As it turns out, the stereotype we’re all familiar with is confirmed by studies and physician-office data, which show that men are less likely than women to complete annual wellness visits or seek medical care for other reasons.

This means many men are missing important health screenings that potentially could prevent serious health issues. Aside from practicing healthy lifestyle habits, one of the most life-changing actions men can take for their health is having an annual health exam with their primary care physician.

TOP HEALTH CHECKS FOR MEN

Wellness exams are opportunities for physicians to screen for serious illnesses like heart disease and cancer. These screenings are vital because they can often catch problems before they become life-threatening.

The top health screenings and frequency for men are noted below.

  • Blood pressure: Should be checked annually.
  • Cholesterol: Every four to six years (starting at age 20) while risk remains low.
  • Diabetes: Checked every three years from age 35 for those with normal blood-sugar levels.
  • Prostate cancer: Screening begins at age 50 for those at average risk, with repeat testing periods annually.
  • Colon cancer: Commence screening at 45 years old for men at average risk. A colonoscopy should be repeated every 10 years if no abnormalities are found (the gold standard).

HELPING HIM MAINTAIN HIS HEALTH

One of the best ways to support your partner’s health is by encouraging him to get regular checkups. We know this is often easier said than done. One approach is to ask him to think about his health in the same way as his car. Regular engine service keeps vehicles running optimally, and it can prevent major breakdowns. The same is true when it comes to maintaining his health. Routine health screenings can help avoid bigger problems down the road.

June is Men’s Health Month: a time dedicated to highlighting health issues affecting men. It encourages them to address these challenges through healthy living and prioritizing healthcare. This makes it an ideal opportunity to discuss the importance of health checks with the men in your life.
