Summer’s here, and it’s time to have fun! Boating, barbecuing, walking on the beach, strolling cute little towns and going on vacation are just some of the things you may have planned. And for all these activities, you may be fretting about what to wear.
Here’s the answer: Don’t stress, and don’t overdress. Go for simple, effortless pieces that take you from outdoors to indoors with ease.
For starters, tank tops are a summer-wardrobe staple. If you don’t like showing your arms, add a light piece on top; my favorite layering trick is using a white button-up shirt as a jacket over tanks and dresses. On bottom, wide-leg pants with a drawstring waistband will keep you cool.
Think about comfort, tone and appropriateness when dressing for any occasion this season. Some churches, restaurants and museums do not allow sleeveless styles. Jewelry accentuated with beads and stones have a beachy, summer feel.
Also choose fabrics that are suitable for the summer heat and travel well. I love gauze because it hides creases. Jersey material is ideal in a suitcase because it won’t wrinkle. Cotton and linen are staples this time of year because they’re breathable and light. Opt for basic colors like white, beige, navy and black and mix and match them. I like a tank in green or blue to match the water or sky.
HERE’S AN EASY, BREEZY SUMMER CAPSULE LOOK:
- Flowy wide leg pants or a maxi skirt
- A tank or light short-sleeve tee
- Poncho or light button-up shirt for layering
- Sandals comfortable enough for walking (Tip: Exposed toes need a pedicure.)
- Hoop earrings
This is the season for easy-to-wear styles, so focus on light and soft pieces that are fresh and crisp. Remember the saying, “Go with the flow”? That’s the key to dressing for summer.
A button-up shirt can do double duty as a jacket or blouse.

Wide-leg pants work as a swimsuit coverup or can be paired with a gauze top for a stylish set.

A cotton tank top that works well with skirts, pants or shorts is a summer essential.
Stretch beaded bracelets are a simple, yet modern, finishing touch to your summer ensemble.

If you tend to wear your hair back, go for statement earrings that are meant to be seen.
