“Don’t Worry Be Happy”

Highlights mental health

The Mental Health Association of South Mississippi’s Don’t Worry Be Happy event may look different this year, but the gathering will go forward — raising awareness and championing the cause of mental health and wellness in the local community.

The 13th annual celebration is set for 7 p.m. on July 17 at the Biloxi Civic Center and will be hosted by presenting sponsor Scarlet Pearl Casino Resort.

“Mental health is such an important part of our lives that is often ignored,” says Kay Daneault, MHASM executive director. Many people got a glimpse into the world of someone experiencing a mental health challenge during the pandemic, she adds, bringing the issue to the forefront.

The 2020 honorees are “a wonderful group of people,” Daneault says, adding that all are involved in some way with helping others, and several are mental health and wellness advocates. Each year the honorees compile a gift package to be auctioned off at Don’t Worry Be Happy.

MHASM already was planning to host the silent auction virtually, and those unable to attend in person can participate from their homes through Event.Gives. Many organizations use this technology, which can be accessed from a mobile phone, laptop or tablet.

Social distancing and other guidelines for Biloxi Civic Center will be observed and may change as the event approaches. For more information, call (228) 864-6274, email info@msmentalhealth.org or check the MHASM’s Facebook page for updates at www. facebook.com/MHASouthMS.

MHASM provides a variety of services, including a day center and homeless outreach. The organization also offers workshops and virtual wellness and support groups that are open to anyone. Another program, Mental Health First Aid, is a national training opportunity that helps participants understand and respond to signs of mental illness. Those interested in learning more are encouraged to contact MHASM at (228) 864-6274 or info@msmentalhealth.org.
