When Brianna and Joseph Young moved from Cape Coral, Florida, to the Coast, they were searching for a change. What they found was a thriving community rich in charm and hospitality and an unexpectedly robust small-business scene that welcomed them warmly.
THE PERFECT ESCAPE
After living in Florida, the couple longed for a place that still offered coastal beauty without the constant influx of tourists.
“We liked Destin, but it was too touristy” Joseph recalls. “When we visited Gulfport, we thought, ‘Wow, it’s like Destin without the crowds.’” The Coast offered the best of both worlds, stunning beaches and a laid-back, welcoming vibe.
A REASONABLE COST OF LIVING
Beyond its natural beauty, the area’s affordability was another huge plus for the couple.
“The cost of living is definitely more reasonable here,” Brianna says. “We still get to enjoy fantastic restaurants, entertainment and the beaches, but at a fraction of what it would cost elsewhere.”
A HAVEN FOR ENTREPRENEURS
As an online business coach helping female entrepreneurs build successful brands, Brianna was pleasantly surprised by the local support for small businesses.
“I asked our Realtor about the small-business community, and she had nothing but amazing things to say,” Brianna says. “That solidified our decision to move here.”
Joseph, a retired investment banker and casino gambling author, also appreciates the accessibility of local casinos, which have helped fuel his passion for the industry.
SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY AT ITS FINEST
For the couple, one of the Coast’s most striking aspects is its people.
“In Florida, we knew our next-door neighbors, but not much beyond that,” Joseph says. “Here, we knew everyone in our neighborhood within a week!”
The couple even hosted a Christmas party at their home and invited their neighbors, almost all of whom showed up.
“It was such a warm and friendly experience,” Brianna says.
A FOODIE’S PARADISE
Both Brianna and Joseph consider themselves food enthusiasts, and the Coast’s culinary scene has blown them away.
“We’ve found so many incredible restaurants,” Brianna says. The couple also has developed a newfound love for grilled oysters, something they never thought they’d enjoy.
SLOWING DOWN AND SAVORING LIFE
From long walks on the uncrowded beaches with their dog, Hennessy, to exploring charming downtown areas like Ocean Springs and Bay St. Louis, the Youngs have fallen in love with their new home.
“There’s something so romantic about walking along the beach at night and feeling completely safe,” Brianna says.
ADVICE FOR POTENTIAL TRANSPLANTS
For those considering a move to the Coast, Brianna and Joseph offer one crucial piece of advice: Choose your neighborhood wisely.
“We wanted a quiet, charming area with easy access to the things we love,” Joseph says. “Finding the right fit for your lifestyle is key.”
NO REGRETS, ONLY EXCITEMENT
As they settle into their first full year here, the Youngs remain as excited about their decision as the day they arrived.
“The people, the hospitality and the food make this place special,” Brianna says. “It truly is a hidden gem that we’re lucky to call home.”
Joseph adds, “For those looking for a coastal lifestyle filled with charm, community and opportunity, the Mississippi Gulf Coast is the perfect place to call home.”
