Insurance checkup: Are you prepared for peak hurricane season?

Five insurance questions every homeowner should ask

September is typically one of the most active months of hurricane season, making this the perfect time for Coast residents to review their insurance coverage and strengthen their disaster preparedness plans.

A few simple steps today can help protect your family, home and finances before the next storm develops.

Here are some factors to consider:

  • Hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30.
  • Historically, September has been among the busiest months for tropical storms and hurricanes.
  • Severe weather can bring flooding, wind damage, power outages and fallen trees to our coastal communities.

Given these realities, every homeowner should ask these five insurance questions:

1. Do I have enough homeowners coverage?

Review your dwelling coverage to ensure it reflects current rebuilding costs. Construction and labor expenses have increased significantly in recent years.

2. Do I understand my wind deductible?

Make sure you know:

  • When it applies
  • How much it is
  • What your out-of-pocket responsibility could be after a storm

3. Am I Protected Against Flooding?

A common misconception is that homeowners insurance covers flood damage. It usually does not.

Consider:

  • Flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP)
  • Private flood insurance options
  • Coverage for both your home and personal belongings

SEPTEMBER PREPAREDNESS TIPS

• Review your insurance policies with your insurance advisor

• Update emergency contact information

• Build or refresh your hurricane supply kit

• Secure important documents before a storm threatens

• Understand claim reporting procedures before you need them

4. Have I documented my property?

Create a home inventory by:

  • Taking photos or videos of each room
  • Saving receipts for major purchases
  • Storing records digitally or in a secure location

5. Is my auto insurance ready for storm season?

Comprehensive coverage may help protect your vehicle from:

  • Falling trees
  • Wind damage
  • Flooding
  • Storm-related debris

The best time to prepare for a hurricane is before a storm appears in the Gulf. A quick policy review can provide confidence that you, your family and your property are properly protected throughout the remainder of hurricane season.
