Nothing says “welcome home” quite like festive greenery on the front door — and this year, I decided to switch things up with a beautiful Christmas door swag. Think of it as a fresh take on the traditional wreath. It’s easy to make, easy to hang and completely customizable to match your holiday style.
Whether you love classic reds and greens, snowy whites or a splash of sparkle, this simple project lets you create a one-of-a-kind piece that will greet guests with holiday cheer before they even step inside. I lean more toward the organic look, but you can easily match your holiday aesthetic by changing out the filler pieces. Plus, it stores easily for use year after year.
SUPPLIES:
- One block of floral foam
- Greenery sticks
- Wooden dowel or yard stick/ruler
- Eucalyptus branches (or anything else as filler)
- Floral wire
- Scissors
- Floral or wire cutters
- Hot glue (optional)
*All my supplies came from Michaels and/or Hobby Lobby.
INSTRUCTIONS:
- Stick and secure the wooden dowel or yard stick inside the middle of the floral foam block. Make sure it’s secure; use hot glue if needed (I didn’t need to).
- Arrange or base greenery sticks and stick them into the foam block. You’re aiming for an upside-down triangle. Add one of your sticks to the top to cover the wooden stick.
- Using floral wire, zipties or twine, secure more pieces of the greenery to the front of the block to cover most of the gaps.
- Add your filler as needed to fill space. I used a bunch of large-leafed eucalyptus as my base filler before adding the sparkling sticks. This gives it a more natural look.
Optional: Add a bow, bells, candy canes or whatever you want to the very front for a pop of color and visual interest.
Optional: Glue a ring or hook to the back — or you can hammer a tiny nail into the wood stick to be able to hang the swag on your door.
Helpful tips:
• When using hot glue for projects like this, the Gorilla Glue brand seems to really hold up well compared to the regular craft hot glue.
• Easily remove your filler to change out for different seasons. Add small pumpkins and sunflowers for a fall harvest look!
