Derby parties have long been a Southern springtime staple — but lately, here on the Coast, they’ve become even more of a reason to gather, dress up and sip something festive.
Whether you’re a horse racing fan or, like me, just love any excuse for a good, themed gathering, the Kentucky Derby delivers the perfect blend of elegance, excitement and Southern charm.
With big hats, bold sips and beautiful weather as your backdrop, it’s the kind of celebration that feels tailor-made for coastal entertaining.
IF YOU’RE THINKING OF HOSTING A DERBY PARTY THIS MAY, HERE ARE A FEW EASY WAYS TO MAKE IT MEMORABLE:
1. DRESS THE PART
Encourage guests to show up in their Derby best; think bright colors, floral prints, bow ties and, of course, over-the-top hats and fascinators. You can even set up a DIY hat-making station with hot glue, ribbons and faux flowers for a playful activity and photo op.
2. SIGNATURE SIPS
Mint juleps are the drink of choice for the Derby, but don’t stop there. Offer a “Run for the Roses” cocktail (like a rosé spritz or bourbon punch) and consider a self-serve bar cart so guests can customize their drinks. Don’t forget crushed ice and fresh mint!
3. BET ON THE FUN
Print out racing forms and let guests draw horse names from a hat. Keep the buy-in small ($1–$5) and offer a prize to the winner. You also can set up lawn games like horseshoes or cornhole to keep the competitive spirit going between races.
4. SOUTHERN BITES
Go for grazing-friendly finger foods with a nod to Kentucky flavors: pimento cheese sliders, deviled eggs, hot brown bites and mini pecan pies. A biscuit board with jam, ham and honey butter always goes fast, too.
5. ADD SOME FLAIR
Decorate with red roses, vintage trophies and horse-themed touches like faux jockey silks or miniature horse figurines. A backdrop with a Derby logo or phrase like “Talk Derby to Me” makes for Instagram-worthy moments.
6. DON’T FORGET THE RACE!
Check your TV or projector setup in advance so you don’t miss the main event. About 6:45 p.m. CT is post time, but guests will enjoy mingling long before that.
A Derby party is the perfect mix of glamour and good times, so break out the bourbon and let the good times trot!
