Proactive insurance: Protect yourself before trouble strikes

With rising inflation and more frequent severe weather, many Americans are taking a closer look at their insurance coverage. A recent Church Mutual survey found that 63% of U.S. adults have reviewed their property insurance in the past six months. This growing awareness signals a shift; people want more than just a safety net after disaster strikes; they want help preventing losses in the first place.

PREVENTION IS KEY

According to Jeff Zehr of Church Mutual, more than half of consumers are open to exploring ways to protect their property and avoid damage — but they can’t do it alone. Insurance professionals play a crucial role in helping customers identify risks, like storm vulnerabilities or fire hazards, before they become costly claims. Wind and flood mitigation investments create more resilient structures.

SMART TECH, SAFER HOMES

One promising tool in the fight against home damage is smart home devices that detect electrical fire and water hazards. A recent study by Green Builder found that smart products save energy and money and help reduce fire and water claims by $400-$600 annually. With over one million sensors already in homes and 30 insurers offering discounts, smart devices are a great example of how technology can make homes safer and insurance more affordable.

BACK-TO-SCHOOL INSURANCE TIPS

As students head back to school or off to college, it’s a good time to review your family’s insurance needs:

EMERGENCY PREP:

During hurricane season, involve kids in building emergency kits and reviewing evacuation plans.

TEEN DRIVERS:

Check your auto policy deductibles, explore accident forgiveness and ask about good student discounts.

COLLEGE LIVING:

Students renting off campus will need their own renters’ insurance. Make sure to document valuables like laptops and phones using tools like the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) Home Inventory app.

HEALTH COVERAGE:

Give students copies of their insurance cards and explain how to find in-network care near campus.

IDENTITY PROTECTION:

College students are at high risk for identity theft. Identity theft insurance can help cover the costs of restoring their financial identity.

Today’s insurance isn’t just about reacting to problems; it’s about preventing them. Whether it’s using smart devices, getting expert advice or preparing your family for emergencies, taking proactive steps now can save money and stress later.

Consult with a knowledgeable insurance agent to understand your options for the best available protection. Carefully review the terms and conditions of your policy.
