Bringing smiles to seniors

Adopt a Grandparent Day returns for 12th year on Sept. 13

More than half of nursing home residents suffer from loneliness — and for the 12th year, volunteers from across the Coast will mobilize to show seniors they are loved and appreciated.

Adopt a Grandparent Day 2025 falls on Sept. 13, and this marks the 12th year that the observance has brought hope and happiness to South Mississippi seniors.

“The purpose of Adopt a Grandparent Day is to celebrate and cherish seniors in our community …,” says Kathy Rogers, founder and executive director of Adopt a Grandparent Day. “Our organization brings volunteers into these nursing homes the second Saturday of every September to visit with residents of nursing homes and assisted living communities.”

The volunteers earn at least one hour of community service, Rogers adds, “plus the invaluable connection and fellowship with residents.” The seniors, in turn, get valuable, uninterrupted quality time with visitors of all ages.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, “treasure boxes” filled with fun and practical goodies for the residents, from hygiene and stationery products to games and gifts, became especially important in lieu of in-person visits. The boxes remain part of the celebration, and donors are invited to purchase items from the event’s Amazon wish list to contribute toward the cause.

This year, according to Rogers, Adopt a Grandparent is looking to increase volunteerism and participation in Stone, Pearl River and George counties.

“We are excited to expand our service and impact as we develop more in-depth continuing education courses for activity directors and nursing home administrators,” she says.

Those who are unable to participate on Sept. 13 still can help with preparations by attending a packing party on Sept. 6, which will be held from 9-11 a.m. at Northwood Church in Gulfport. To get involved in Adopt a Grandparent Day, to donate or to learn more, visit adoptagrandparentday.org.
