Protecting our seniors: How to choose the right home care or facility for your loved one

With baby boomers now over 65 and chronic illnesses on the rise, the demand for safe, reliable care is higher than ever. Here’s what every family needs to know before saying “yes” to a home care agency or facility.

Choosing a home care provider can be overwhelming, especially when your loved one’s safety and well-being are on the line. Unfortunately, in Mississippi, non-medical home care agencies are not required to be licensed or regulated, which means anyone can claim to be a provider — even without proper training, systems or accountability.

This lack of oversight opens the door to fraud, caregiver impersonation and inconsistent care, all of which can have dangerous consequences. I’ve seen families devastated by poor decisions made in desperation. Here’s the truth: Not all help is good help, and knowing what to look for can protect the people you love.

Adding to the urgency, all baby boomers are now age 65 or older, and we’re seeing a sharp rise in chronic illnesses like diabetes, dementia, COPD and heart disease. More than ever, seniors are expressing the desire to age in place and receive care in the comfort of their own homes. This shift makes home care one of the most in-demand and vulnerable services in our healthcare system today. That’s why families must be empowered to choose wisely.

1. ASK IF THE COMPANY IS A LEGITIMATE BUSINESS:

Mississippi doesn’t require a license for non-medical home care, but a reputable provider should still have a business license, proof of insurance and a verifiable physical address, website and contact number.

2. ASK THE RIGHT SAFETY QUESTIONS:

Because nonmedical home care agencies in Mississippi are not licensed, it’s up to you to dig deeper and verify who you’re hiring. Important questions include:

  • Do you run state and national background checks on every caregiver?
  • What background check agency do you use?
  • Do you verify professional and personal references?
  • Are you insured and bonded to protect clients and families?
  • Do you provide around-the-clock care coverage if a caregiver calls out?
  • Do you have a nurse on staff or on call to review care needs and offer oversight?
  • What billing system do you use? (A lack of a professional billing system can be a sign the agency may not be legitimate.)

Tip: A reputable home care agency will never charge for an initial consultation.

3. KNOW WHO’S IN CHARGE:

If there’s an issue, who do you contact? Ask about the agency’s chain of command and how they handle missed shifts or emergencies. Accountability saves lives.

4. REQUIRE AN IN-PERSON CONSULTATION:

Meeting face-to-face gives you a chance to assess professionalism, ask questions and see if the agency is truly listening to your needs.

5. GET IT IN WRITING:

You should receive a clear service agreement outlining what care will be provided, how often and at what cost. Hidden fees, unclear schedules and poor documentation are major red flags.

CONSIDERING A FACILITY INSTEAD? HERE’S WHAT TO ASK

For families exploring assisted living or personal care homes, here are questions you must ask during a tour:

  • What’s the staff-to-resident ratio?
  • Are background checks conducted on all employees?
  • What kind of training does your staff receive?
  • Do you have awake staff 24/7?
  • Do you have a nurse on site or on call?
  • Can residents age in place or will they need to relocate if care needs increase?
  • What’s included in the monthly rate, and what’s not?
  • Also, observe the environment:
  • Are residents clean, calm and engaged?
  • Do rooms smell fresh?
  • Does the staff interact warmly with residents?

Choosing care isn’t just a decision; it’s a promise to keep your loved one safe.

Don’t be afraid to ask hard questions. This is your loved one’s home. You deserve transparency and trust.

WHY THIS MATTERS SO DEEPLY

When seniors are matched with untrained caregivers or placed in the wrong facility, the consequences can be severe: neglect, emotional abuse, medical complications, financial exploitation or repeat hospitalizations. Unfortunately, I’ve seen it happen far too often.

Families must move from panic to preparedness. Choosing care isn’t just about convenience; it’s about safety, dignity and quality of life.

REPORT ABUSE OR FRAUD

If you suspect abuse, neglect or exploitation of a senior in Mississippi, please report it immediately:

  • Elder Abuse Hotline: 1 (800) 222-8000 (Mississippi Adult Protective Services)
  • Medicaid Fraud Control Unit: 1 (800) 852-8341

Even if you’re unsure, it’s always better to speak up. Our elders deserve protection.
