by Jackie Merlau | jmerlaumakeup.com

With a new year, comes a new you! At the beginning of the January, many of us create lists and set goals to better ourselves and our everyday routines. In the spirit of the ringing in 2018, I have compiled a list for you that consists of new makeup products or techniques that can be added to your existing makeup routine. There is no better time to try something new and different than right now!

SETTING SPRAY

Add a setting spray to your routine. When you finish applying your makeup, set it with a spray that will help your makeup last throughout the day. (Urban Decay All Nighter, $32)

EYE PRIMER

Use an eye primer prior to applying your eyeshadow, which will keep your shadow from creasing and the colors will apply more pigmented. A primer also maintains your makeup throughout the day. (MAC Pro Longwear Paint Pot, $22)

TRANSLUCENT POWDER

Set your makeup with a translucent powder. Softly apply this powder to those tough parts of your face that just don’t seem to hold makeup. The powder has a long wear, holds the makeup in place and is colorless, so it doesn’t add any flashback. (RCMA No-Color Powder, $12)

MOISTURIZER

Get a moisturizer with sunscreen in it. This is a must before applying a flawless makeup application. And since you’re already applying moisturizer, go ahead and apply one that promotes healthy skin with sun protection too! (Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream SPF 30, $27.50)

COLOR EYELINER

Use color eyeliner to give your makeup a pop. There is a plethora of eyeliner pencils in every color you can imagine. Find a color that makes you feel sassy, or one that makes your eye color stand out. I particularly enjoy smudging a colorful eyeliner along my bottom lash line. (Makeup For Ever Aqua Liner, $21)

GLITTER

Don’t be afraid to incorporate glitter. This is another fun way to add some spice to your makeup routine. If you’re a lover of all things that sparkle, this is a great addition for you! Use this as an eyeliner, pat glitter on your lips or even buff the glitter on your entire eyelid! (Lemonhead.la Spacepaste, $23)

Change your lipstick color. Whether you try a bolder color, a brighter pink or something nude, embrace something different. Try changing it up a bit to reflect the seasons or your new “This is my year” attitude! (MAC lipsticks, $17.50)
